Words and Phrases

Here are a few common words and phrases used by muslims along with their meanings in English:

Alhamdulillah: Praise be to God

Allah: God (the Almighty One)

Allahu akbar: God is Great

Assalaamu alaikum: Peace be unto you

Ash-hadu an la ilaha illa'llah: I bear witness that there is no god but God

Ash-hadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah: I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings of God be upon him) is the messenger of God

Astaghfirullah: I seek the forgiveness of God

Auzu billahi min-ash-shaitan-ir-rajim: I seek God's protection from Satan, the accursed

Bismillahi’l-Rahmani’l-Rahim: In the name of God, the Beneficient, the Merciful

Inna lillahi wa inna ilahi raji'un: From God we did come from and to God we shall return

Insha Allah: By the Will of God (or God-willing)

Jazakallahu khayran/Jazakallah khayr/Jazakallahu khayr: May God reward you for the good

La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah: There is no power and no strength except in God

Masha'Allah: Whatever God wills (or God has willed it)

Subhana Allah: Glory be to God
